The answer would be something along the lines of handling needles safely and blood-borne pathogens.

2. Safety and Infection Control

Following rigid safety protocol is one of the most important aspects of phlebotomy and this will be covered on the exam. An example question may be asking you for examples of engineering control for safety and control of infection. An answer would be safety needles and sharps containers.

3. Personal Protection Equipment

Certified phlebotomists work in a wide range of healthcare settings. Each setting has their own requirements for what type of personal protection equipment should be worn depending on the situation. You should know what personal protection equipment should be used for several different scenarios.

4. Blood Collection Practices

As this is the heart of phlebotomy, you should know the proper procedure for collecting blood, the name of each piece of equipment used for each step of the procedure and the appropriate technique. An example question may ask you what the best procedure is if you are trying to stop excessive bleeding from a needle stick. The correct answer would be to apply direct pressure. You may also be asked what the common size is for the needle used during a venipuncture procedure. The answer would be twenty one.

5. Order of Draw

You should memorize the tube order by color as well as the additional additives. Testing departments and test types will also be included on the exam. Such questions may include asking you what color tube and which additive would be used for a APTT and protime. The correct answer would be sodium citrate for the additive and light blue for the appropriate tube.
